"Cleaning a building's l year old aluminum window frames"

An ongoing give-and-take get-go back in 2003 ...

2003

Q. My friend is moving into a new/old building that has aluminum windows...deeply oxidized, stained with clay that is over 50 years quondam. She has tried diverse remedies to make clean up the windows and steel wool only gets her half the distance. The desired production would be something that, when applied, will make clean up the "fine" dirt spots...as with removing tarnish from silvery. Is in that location a substance that has a molecular make-upwardly, or anything else for that thing, that will turn this job into a "wipe and clean" from an overly rigorous exercise?

A. I've tried two unlike brands of 'aluminum cleaner' myself and constitute them to be the next all-time thing to useless. I have heard that 'Shipping Stripper' is what you are looking for, merely I oasis't used it myself and information technology is noxious stuff: use outdoors simply, upwind, wearing Condom Gloves [affil. link to info/product on Amazon] and goggles [affil. link to info/product on Amazon].

A. Try this mixture:

ten-40 gm sodium carbonate (washing soda) [affil. link to info/product on Amazon]
5-x gm Waterglass [affil. link to info/product on Amazon]
one lit h2o,temp. 80 °C

Only for well degreased objects (petroleum or benzene or Acetone [affil. link to info/product on Amazon] ).Use rubber gloves. Rinse well.

A. Try SOS Pads [affil. link to info/product on Amazon]. Not Brillo. They're messy simply they do the pull a fast one on and smoothen the aluminum as well.

A. I only tried using WD-40 [affil. link to info/product on Amazon] on my nighttime chocolate-brown oxidized aluminum window frames & it improved their appearance quite a bit. Worth a try!

A. I finally plant the mode to clean information technology and I am very happy.

Tools: big and small slot spiral commuter, sanding block, spray bottle, old tooth brush, used cotton wool underwear, newspaper towel.

1. Remove whatsoever moving office and clean them with soap water separately. The latch, screen holder and turn handle tin all be removed by loosening the screws. Get new screws from hardware store (cost $5.00 for a 100, two types of screws are needed, a long i and a curt one). If you gonna spend the effort to clean them, you may every bit well bask the new screws to brand information technology worthwhile. The handle is a little tricky, study the underside of the window to see how to dislodge it. Once you lot dislodge one, everything else is piece of cake. Aluminum windows are very sturdy, it is not likely y'all break any parts by cleaning. Lightly pry open the slot by 1/32 inch to remove the handle, it will budge only it does not break.

2. brush abroad dirt, spray soap water (laundry detergent will practise) and clean with wet cleaning pad (must have some scratchy surface, not merely sponge. Likewise much water will get very messy to deal with. Wipe dry any excess water when it starts dripping ).

iii. Spray soap water over again and sand with a sanding block lightly (wearing rubber gloves). Wipe away dirty h2o to run across whether more sanding is needed. When the sand block gets shine, restore it by washing it in the h2o. You can get sand block from home depot which is sand surface coated on a piece of hard sponge.

4. Tiny corners can be cleaned with material wrapped around a screwdriver.

This will go aluminum window dorsum to its wonderful "similar new" state. I have been wondering how to do it for 8 years. I finally got it last week.

Q. I am trying to fix upwardly the exterior of a small, freestanding edifice. The windows are large with aluminum mullions that take "oxidized" from the table salt air. They are in decent conditions. I but want to remove the oxidation and leave it unpainted. I'k trying to find out what is the overall best process to exercise this including what production(s) I should use? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Best regards,

Jeff

A. The best thing to use on aluminum window frames is Mothers Cleaner and Shine. Did one side of my VW jitney and they're starting to look like Chrome. Wipe it on and wipe slowly dorsum and along will beginning to see back the Polish. Wipe off with a soft material and repeat information technology until Thursday if you desire. Just did it tonight; starting to look similar Chrome. Use a small buffer in betwixt cleanings. Promise this helps

A. Naval jelly is not supposed to exist used on aluminium, read the label. Using whatsoever abrasive volition leave scratches on the metal. I have used steel wool and Murphy's Oil Soap [affil. link to info/product on Amazon] with expert results; however, accept not found a good wipe-off chemical solution. Looking into aircraft cleaner next. This is not a cleaner that will be available at large box stores. You will demand to look into commercial cleaners.

A. I concord with the Mother'due south Mag & Aluminum Shine [affil. link to info/product on Amazon]. My windows are the "bronze" aluminum clad and thirty years old. Lots of oxidation and dirt. The Mothers foam wipes on and you rub lightly until information technology starts to turn blackness, then buff with a soft cloth. Information technology's more fourth dimension consuming than actually beingness hard work just the end will look new.

Q. At present if only I tin remove the black water stains on the inside wood.

I'grand cleaning the interior window frames of a school built in 1960. Although it is a lot of elbow and wrist "grease", I'm using the sanitizing surface wipes (like Lysol) with the gritty surface they add to some of them. Wipe the (largely alcohol) wetness over about 3 feet of frame, expect a little flake (like 15-xx seconds) and then outset wiping with the same gritty wipe ... dorsum and along ... back and forth. Not perfect (and rather production wasteful) merely I'one thousand satisfied; it tin can keep the glass from needing to be done and it's (relatively) non-toxic.
